A bit of hoo-ha as arisen from Obama’s recent and casual dismissal of art history as a subject less useful when compared to ‘the trades and skilled manufacturing as a viable career’. This he ventured last week on a visit to Wisconsin to big up his attempts to boost American manufacturing. As Scott Jaschik observed for the US platform, Inside Higher Ed, Obama covered the comparison in emergency humour-foam by proclaiming, to comforting big laughs: ‘Now, nothing wrong with an art history degree – I love art history. So I don’t want to get a bunch of emails from everybody’.
